CHEMICAL PEELS

WHAT ARE CHEMICAL PEELS?

Chemical peels are a type of exfoliation that removes dead layers of skin through the use of topical products that have varying chemicals in them. The word “chemicals” tends to have a bad connotation, but please keep in mind that even water and oxygen are chemicals. At EyeCandy Express Spa we use high-quality, professional lines, specifically Glymed, Face Reality, and Skin Script.

Chemical peels can range from very mild with no peeling, to strong with visible skin peeling. The type of peel will be determined by a Master Esthetician after reviewing your skin history chart, visually examining the area to be treated, and determining your skincare goal.

  • Chemical peels can help to improve the appearance of acne, fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, texture, and tone. They are amazing at combating aging and sun-damaged skin. Chemical peels (also called acid peels or rapid exfoliation) help to produce collagen and elastin, as well as increase your cell turnover ratio.

Pre-Chemical Peel

  • Discontinue use of any topical medications such as Retin-A at least one week prior to service.
  • If you have used Accutane you must have stopped using it at least six months prior to any skincare service.
  • Avoid facial treatments such as microdermabrasion, facials, and waxing for a week prior to your microdermabrasion appointment
  • You need to wait at least three weeks after laser treatments, Botox, or fillers to have a chemical peel done.
  • No sun exposure for at least a week before your appointment.
  • No exfoliation to the skin for a week before.
  • Discontinue the use of at-home skincare with glycolic acid, salicylic acid, retinol, or enzymes at least three days before your treatment.
  • If you have a history of cold sores it is recommended that you take an anti-viral for at least three days before your treatment.
  • For best results use a glycolic cream such as Glymed’s Treatment Cream nightly, available at EyeCandy Express Spa, for at least two weeks prior to your treatment. Discontinue the use of it three nights prior to your appointment.

Post-Chemical Peels-

  • Do not get the skin wet for 12 hours, cleanse with gentle cleansers such as Glymed’s Mega Moisturizing Cleanser, available at EyeCandy Express Spa.
  • Avoid working out and excessive heat for 24 hours after the peel.
  • Depending on the strength of the peel you may or may not experience frosting on the skin. These are white spots on the skin, they are normal and will usually turn purple-brown before peeling, leaving new fresh skin. DO NOT pick or scratch the skin.
  • You may or may not have flaking of the skin, moisturize as often as needed, and do not pull at the skin.
  • Avoid sun exposure for at least seven days. If you absolutely cannot avoid the sun you must use a sunblock of at least 30 SPF and re-apply every two hours while in the sun. Our favorite is Glymed’s Environmental Protection Gel available at EyeCandy Express Spa.  A hat and sunglasses are also recommended.
  • No exfoliation to the skin for seven days after your treatment. This includes scrubs, enzymes, acids, harsh washcloths, and waxing.
  • No microdermabrasion, laser treatments, or facials for at least a week after your treatment.
  • You may continue your Glymed Treatment Cream after three nights.
  • It is possible to have a few breakouts after the treatment because any trapped bacteria will be brought to the surface. DO NOT pick or pull at the skin for at least seven days as you are more likely to pigment.
  • Keep your skin clean and moisturized.  This is a great time to use serums and high-quality moisturizers since the skin is going to absorb the product deeper than usual. If you need help finding the best products for your skin, let your provider know
